I have worked with White GSD for 16+ years and have found that they seem to be more laid back and in tuned to family life and have less working drive. Working as in added energy and drive. That makes the White GSD very suited for family life. The beauty of the White GSD and the undying dedication they have towards their family is endearing to say the least. The White GSD is more accepted today than it was 10 years ago.
When I first started with whites, I knew right away they were special. I have always had a white in my program.
The whites I have in my program now are: · Ramsey white long coat male; Carries Blue imported from the UK
· Glenda white female; carrying blue from www.omorrow.com
I also have 4 known white carriers. CorDawn Blue, Mya, Pandamonium, Pumpkin Pie & Chicory in my program now.
Many breeders believed the white meant they were albino’s in the early days. The White gene in the GSD is not related to Albinism. It is a gene that masks the color and covers the true color up on the dog. So, white in itself is not a color but rather is a cloak for a colored GSD. The only way to know what color and pattern the dog is masking is by test matings to colored dogs. If you breed a white GSD to a white GSD ALL puppies will be white. You can also breed 2 colored GSD and get white puppies in that litter as well. What this means is that both of the parents are carrying the white gene.
Whites can range in their shade of white just as the colored dogs can. Some whites can have a crème hue to their coat, it can be on the ears, and down the back this is perfectly acceptable. These dogs can be shown with the cast to their coat it is not a penalty.
There are no known health issues associated with the ‘color’ of the white GSD.
