Piebald German Shepherd Information

Wow where do I start? This is not a typical pattern in the GSD breed however since we know that recessives are for-ever and the original German Shepherds came in all coat types, colors and patterns that seeing this pattern should not really be that much of a surprise.  However, seeing them in the flesh it certainly does make you step back and ponder.

CorDawn Blue is one of my most favorite female German Shepherds.  She is a big blue sable and her father is Storm owned by my good friend Dawn Malcolm.  CorDawn Blue’s mother is from Alice Horton (now deceased) aka Snow Cloud German Shepherds.

Ross is a solid liver that was being boarded here while he met his requirements to be shipped to his new owner/mom Patricia Tenant.  He was bred by Tony Guiterez in NM.  Ross arrived when he was about 10 wks old.  Since he had to stay longer than the usual required time, Pat suggested I use him as a stud on one of my girls.

Being that I want to increase the bloodlines for the blue and liver German Shepherds I decided to mate Ross to CorDawn Blue to make a litter of blue/liver carriers.

On January 24, 2010 CorDawn Blue gave me a litter of 6.  In that litter there are:

2 solid blacks; 1 male named Cory now residing with a great friend locally named Rachel and 1 female named Joan Jett awaiting her perfect pet home.

2 sables; 1 male named Ted Nugent he is staying with us and 1 female named Katarina, she is also staying with us.

2 piebalds; 1 black piebald female named Blackberry Pie and 1 sable piebald female named Cherry Pie, they are both staying with us.

Ross has been shipped to his Mum in the UK you can see more of him by clicking  <<<HERE>>>  The parents and the puppies will have their DNA done by AKC (for parentage) and vetgen for pattern identity.

The piebald gene is still being researched to find out what causes the many variants it produces.

The piebald gene is also known as the white spotting gene.

It can produce a small amount of white or it can produce an extreme amount of white.

We know this gene is a recessive so both parents must carry it to produce it.

Since the information is ever changing I feel it is best to provide this link to an expert in this field.  Sheila Schmutz did test CorDawn Blue’s sire (Storm) for the white spotting gene as Storm has produced 2 pups with this pattern to an unrelated female.

Blackberry at 15 months old, I love this girl!

Please keep in mind that CorDawn Blue and Ross are not related within at least 5 generations so there is not any inbreeding or line breeding.

DNA will be done by AKC (for parentage authenticity) and vetgen for pattern identity.

Here is Cherry Pie at 1 day old  and at 1 wk old:

The next pics are @ 4 wks

7 wks; please note she is not dirty, the crème color you see on her coat is her sable bleeding through, in person you can see it is ticked and obviously color bleeding through and not dirt
